Some interesting info: This is very reminiscent of the Baby X experiments, in which it was discovered that people reacted differently to a baby’s behavior depending on whether or not they believed the baby to be male or female. People were asked to watch a video of a baby reacting to a startling image (a Jack-in-the-box popping up), and describe the baby’s emotional state. When people believed the baby to be female, they described the baby as being scared and upset; when they thought the baby was male, they perceived the baby to be angry. This was very telling, as it showed that literally identical behavior could be construed differently based on the perceived gender of the subject.

Enquiring minds are eager to know what the heck befell a young man who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a group of women in downtown Toronto.

**Trigger Warning: Rape culture, victim blaming - exercise caution before clicking the link or reading further**

After a man - who is alternately referred to as a teenager - in Toronto reported to the police that he had been the victim of a sexual assault at the hands of four women in their thirties, Rosie DiManno thought it would be a good idea to pen one of the most disgusting, victim-blaming, pathetic excuse for an article I have ever had the misfortune of reading. DiManno inexplicably thought it was appropriate to write about a sexual assault using the following phrases:

“Of course, one man’s sexual assault is another man’s sexual fantasy come true.”

Having a fantasy of multiple simultaneous partners is not an invitation to be raped.

Mustn’t be seen to make light of an alleged sexual crime simply because the victim is a male…snickering quotient.”

Excuse me, but I simply don’t see the “snickering quotient” of someone being outnumbered, overpowered, and sexually assaulted. I doubt the millions of victims of sexual assault - victims of all genders - see that either.

“Sexual assault, you say? Lucky guy others say, nudge-nudge, a fivesome and didn’t even have to pay for it.”

Those people are despicable human beings, they are wrong, and they and their boss should probably be promptly fired from the Toronto Star.

“They could be sex molls or sex maulers.”

The fact that they were reported as perpetrators of a sexual assault makes them criminals, actually. What journalism program taught DiManno or any of her superiors that this was okay?

“Some “assaults’’ are merely unwanted touching, annoying for an adult woman but should be slapped down when they occur rather than directed to police.”

This teenager was offered a ride home by these women, and taken instead to an abandoned parking lot and assaulted. If this is something the police should ignore, I’m not sure what their role is in society.

Wanted: Bad girls in black minidresses and stilettos, approach with caution.

Yes, the sexual predators in their thirties are just “girls,” as well as an excellent punchline, according to the Toronto Star.

This isn’t DiManno’s first horrifying and utterly hamfisted attempt at being clever. In January, she came under fire for her disgusting coverage of another sexual assault, and the Star immediately came to her defense. As a result, another victim of sexual assault has been publicly mocked, mere weeks after teenage rape victim Rehteah Parsons tragically took her life after being mocked by her peers.

Please sign the petition to have Rosie DiManno fired. This is reprehensible, unacceptable, and cannot be allowed to continue.

Katelyn Campbell, the school’s student body vice president, refused to attend an assembly where Christian speaker Pam Stenzel told GW students “condoms aren’t safe” and warned that any type of sexual contact would lead to sexually transmitted diseases and cause women to be infertile, according to an audio recording of her presentation.

In her YouTube videos, Stenzel shouts and says things such as women who take birth control are “10 times more likely to contract a disease … or end up sterile or dead.” She allegedly told GW and Riverside students, “If your mom gives you birth control, she probably hates you.”

Something can’t actually be sexist if it’s really, really nice, right?

I mean, if someone compliments me on my looks or my cooking, that’s not sexist. That’s awesome! I should be thrilled that I’m being noticed for something positive!

Yet there are many comments that, while seemingly complimentary, somehow still feel wrong. These comments may focus on an author’s appearance rather than the content of her writing, or mention how surprising it is that she’s a woman, being that her field is mostly filled with men. Even though these remarks can sometimes feel good to hear – and no one is denying that this type of comment can feel good, especially in the right context – they can also cause a feeling of unease, particularly when one is in the position of trying to draw attention towards her work rather than personal qualities like her gender or appearance.

In social psychology, these seemingly-positive-yet-still-somewhat-unsettling comments and behaviors have a name: Benevolent Sexism. Although it is tempting to brush this experience off as an overreaction to compliments or a misunderstanding of benign intent, benevolent sexism is both real and insidiously dangerous.

What happens when there is a predominant stereotype saying that women are better stay-at-home parents than men because they are inherently more caring, maternal, and compassionate? It seems nice enough, but how does this ideology affect the woman who wants to continue to work full time after having her first child and faces judgment from her colleagues who accuse her of neglecting her child? How does it affect the man who wants to stay at home with his newborn baby, only to discover that his company doesn’t offer paternity leave because they assume that women are the better candidates to be staying at home?

At the end of the day, “good intent” is not a panacea. Benevolent sexism may very well seem like harmless flattery to many people, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t insidiously dangerous.

Read In Between The Lines, There Was An Uprising In Guantanamo Bay Yesterday

After a mass hunger strike by 44+ of the 166 detainees that started Feb. 6th and years of peaceful resistance, prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have had enough of the torture, indefinite detention and horrid conditions. The lawyers of the inmates insist that the hunger strike in more widespread and nearly every person at the prison is refusing to eat.

Inmates covered security camera’s and windows and used broomsticks, mop handles and makeshift batons made up of tape and water bottles to clash with guards.

The violence erupted during an early morning raid at Camp 6 when guards attempted to end communal living and place all inmates in single cells. According to military officials, guards shot 4 ‘non lethal’ weapons at the inmates, 1 of which was injured. Though this should be taken with a grain a salt considering that Guantanamo Bay is where the military is known to torture inmates.

It should also be noted that 87 of the prisoners at Gitmo are cleared for release and 46 other prisoners cannot be prosecuted for a ‘lack of evidence’ according to the U.S. government. In other words, over 80% of the inmates being held at Guantanamo Bay would otherwise be free.

In January of 2013, Obama signed the NDAA 2013 which allows him to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge or trial, which is literally contradicts the constitution, and banned the government from closing Guantanamo Bay.

Landsburg is using his position as a professor of economics to promote rape, and the University is defending his right to do so. We demand he be fired immediately!

Landsburg’s pro-rape argument is uniquely sickening — he’s saying that rape is a net benefit to society as long as the victim is unconscious, because an unconscious victim is not negatively impacted by rape whereas the rapist benefits.
