Kathy Griffin’s Public Pap Smear
Comedian Kathy Griffin is doing her part to promote women’s health and to raise awareness of the importance of Pap Smears by…getting one on television.
Beside a pool.
So, publicity stunt? Most likely, but I can’t find myself looking down at a publicity stunt designed to encourage women to get themselves regularly tested and keep up their health. But honestly, what upsets me more than Griffin raising awareness via some wacky poolside scheme was the language used to link to the Huffington Post Article from Celebuzz.com:
Kathy Griffin has agreed to get a public pap smear. Wait, don’t start vomiting just yet, it is to raise awareness for women’s health and it is going to be televised. Okay, now you can start vomiting.
Ex…cuse me? “Now you can start vomiting?” Yes, because a basic health procedure is something to vomit over. Oh, wait, women have to get their vaginas touched by DOCTORS once in awhile? GROSS. SICK, DUDE. Nasty! What if she has, like, a disease or something?
Oh, you’re doing this to check for disease? Like…cervical cancer? Oh come on, it’s not like every 47 seconds a woman is diagnosed with it or anything! Or like 4,000 women every year die from it!
Look, like I said, even if this is just Griffin’s bid for attention, if she can at the same time draw attention to the importance of regular Pap Smears and, maybe, hopefully, breast exams, I consider it a win.
